1. Define the term 'carbon footprint.' A) What is the name of the thing that happens from carbon dioxide being emitted into the atmosphere and what does it mean? B) List two effects of this happening. 2. What activities have the biggest impact on the amount of carbon emitted? 3. Which 3 countries have the largest carbon footprints? 4. Use these three carbon footprint calculators and record your results. Note the comparisons they make. Eg. It takes the equivalent of 10 international flights a year to sustain my lifestyle. 5. Choose one of these infographics and summarise it's message in 2-3 sentences. 6. Which industry or industries do you think would have the largest carbon footprint in NZ? 7. See if you're right. Our oceans are under threat from toxic plastic waste. One of the main culprits is microbeads - billions of tiny plastic beads that can kill marine life and even end up in our food.
But the Environment Minister, Nick Smith, is running a public consultation on banning them in New Zealand. it stops on the 28th February so there's not much time. Microbeads are tiny pieces of plastic that are found in many household products like facial scrubs, shower gels and toothpaste. They may sound benign but when we’re finished washing our faces or brushing our teeth, those bits of plastic are flushed out into the ocean. There they’re mistaken for food by all sorts of marine wildlife like turtles, fish, seabirds and even whales. It’s great to see the Government finally starting to take microbeads seriously. But we need you to make sure Nick Smith does all he can stop these tiny harmful plastics from reaching our oceans. We’ve seen other countries like the U.S. announce a ban but then introduce dodgy loopholes that allow products containing microbeads to stay on the supermarket shelves. We can’t let that happen in New Zealand. Put in a submission to ban microbeads now The Government’s proposed ban is a testament to the hard work of grassroots organisations like Plastic Diet and the thousands of people who supported their petition to the Environment Minister last year. We’re really pleased to see this consultation going ahead. But we don’t want to take any chances. Please join us and write a submission to urge Nick Smith to ban microbeads.
