Haiku poems originate from Japan. They take the form of 3 lines and a total of 17 syllables (normally 5,7,5 pattern). They are written in the present tense and highlight an aspect of nature or seasons.
Cinquain poems link to the latin word quinque (five) as they are 5 lines with 22 syllables in total. The pattern of syllables per line is 2,4,6,8,2. Each poem creates a complete 'thought' on the topic.
Clerihew are poems consisting of 4 lines which have 2 rhyming couplets. They are about a well-known celebrity that the poet gently pokes fun at!
The Irish Limerick was believed to have originated when returning soldiers brought them back to their hometown of Limerick. Each poem consists of 5 lines and lines 1,2,5 rhyme and lines 3,4 rhyme.
