Suppose that Brian has a pencil. To help sort out his feelings about his parents, he writes to one of them on a piece of birch bark. Write the letter that Brian might write to either his mother or his father. Keep in mind the issues that are revealed in the novel. Remember, too, that for certain reasons, Brian does not want to tell his father 'the secret'.

Something has been really irritating me. I don't know if you know or not but there is a secret. It is to do with mum, it is her fault not yours it is all mums fault. she is the one with a secret. It was her and him, a man she has not talked about but I have seen. Why did she have to do it? I really wish we could be a family once again. Just forget about the secret and move on.

Dear Dad, I'm missing you. I'm struggling to remember you, and every moment I think of you the more your image fades in my mind. There is also something that's tearing me up on the inside, and I think it's why you and Mom split up. It's a secret, but I can't bare it any longer. Mom was with another guy, and I think that it's important for you to know, despite what I've been telling myself. I want you and Mom to make up, I want the man to be out of her life, but that's not gonna happen. I want, no, I need to see you together, to be happy together, but that is far from reality. I'm sorry you have to know this way, but I need to do this for my sanity. Please know also that I love you desperately and I want almost anything to see you again.
